very cozy place. the interior feels almost maze-like with little courtyards full of tropical plants and odd-but-charming decor. room was nice aside from not having a proper reading lamp. the breakfast buffet was one of the best I've ever had, at any hotel – lots of things to choose from both local cr foods and the usual toast etc. the little restaurant next door also had some good dinner options.

We were just stopping for one night after a long flight. The connection from airport SJO was easy and fast. The bus-stop (TUASA) is only 2 minutes walking. We also took the bus to Puntarenas which was 15 minutes walking. The staff was friendly and breakfast was really good!

the room was extremely comfortable, the bed especially. it was large, bright and with a beautiful view on San Jose. The service is great, people are very helpful and the breakfast options were great too :) we had pinto de gallo as a traditional breakfast and it was really really good !

    San Jose is a patchwork of beautiful sites amidst a chaotic mess of traffic-riddled highways. We didn't really stay long enough to give it an accurate review, but our short stay was not encouraging. We spent most of our time in Costa Rica on the Pacific Coast, which was quite pleasant.

    In general the city hasn't much to it - the best part is...

    In general the city hasn't much to it - the best part is getting out on tours to see some nature! Traffic is also terrible at peak times, sometimes tripling the time is takes to get somewhere. Overall I had an enjoyable experience, but was reliant on tours, organised activities, extensive research on restaurants and Uber to get around.

    As much as we like the hotel we we're impressed with the city It was dirty, sad and unpleasant city while la fortuna is exact opposite I hope they work in San Jose and improve the city. It really could attack people if this city will clean up with some good parks and development Good luck

    There is much to do and see here…very spread out.

    There is much to do and see here…very spread out. Might be wise budget-wise if longer stay to rent a car. Otherwise Uber is great here! The Green Arc Foundation, the art museum, walking tours, local food—Soda—, La Chimba, Sunday farmer markets, and refreshing climate are all so enjoyable!

    The most significant disadvantages of San Jose are the...

    The most significant disadvantages of San Jose are the traffic--which is truly some of the worst one can imagine--and the overall lack of safe, public commons. The lack of public commons is a common issue to most of the country but seems worse in San Jose as nearly all property is behind bars and razor wire. There are some close by attractions for tourists so it can be a good base for a stay.

    I was there for a seminar so did not have time for...

    I was there for a seminar so did not have time for sightseeing. I rented a car for easy transport. Enjoyed close by restaurants for dinner in the evenings. I don’t remember the names of the restaurants but they were suggested by the concierge and fellow participants of the seminar I attended

    Santo Tomas is a historic jem in the heart of San Jose. Once you step into the lobby you can see the detail of the furnishing and finishings have been well preserved. The rooms are comfortable and there are several lounge areas throughout where you can relax and mingle with fellow travelers. The pool and hot tub provide relief after a day of exploring the downtown sites, all within walking distance. The (provided) breakfast is excellent and the staff are friendly and helpful.

    Great location, very clean spacious bedroom. There is also balcony to enjoy outdoor and downstairs living area. I stayed one night when I arrived San Jose. The owner kindly store my heavy suitcase for two week while I was exploring other part of the Costa Rica with a small backpack. I returned to stay here for another night before my flight to Europe. There is a plenty restaurants and big supermarket near by, walking distance to bus terminal and town centre.

    The only proper modern hotel in our stay in Costa Rica, modelled on the Western standards. Large room with a huge bed, table, chest of drawers, closet with iron and board, spacious bathroom with a powerfull shower - all in a good state. The buffet style breakfast was varied and tasty. Central pool looked big - although we didn't use it. There's an area with several restaurans nearby and hotel provides free shuttles to the aiport which was handy.

    Authentic small hotel promoting sustainability. Local produce prepared and cooked by local people. Clean crisp bedding on comfortable beds and easy to work hot shower. Room is Costa Rican in character with plenty of storage space if staying a few days. Sadly we were just passing thru after arriving in San Jose. Reception staff were lovely as well. Would have liked to have stayed longer.
