A Tribute to Norman History
Surrounded by Normandy countryside, Caen is a proud city which pays poignant tribute to its past. It suffered greatly during World War II and although most damage has been carefully rebuilt, one monument remaining partly in ruins is Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux church.
It sits opposite a floral park overlooked by the stately 11th-century Abbaye aux Hommes, built by William the Conqueror, who is buried here. His wife is buried in the equally grand Abbaye aux Dames by an even larger park to the east. Between the 2 lies another of William’s creations – the remarkably intact 11th-century Norman castle which now houses museums of Normandy history and fine art.
Another unmissable museum is the Memorial for Peace, a sensitive portrayal of the horrors of war, with particular emphasis on the D-Day landings on beaches north of the city. One road leading there passes Pegasus Bridge and the large Caen-Ouistreham passenger ferry port. The city is also served by Carpiquet Airport and a train station.
The surrounding streets are lined with shops and restaurants, and there are a few half-timbered buildings dotted around. The bars on Rue Ecuyére offer some of the best nightlife and are popular with the large student population.

Good centre for touring WWII sites.
Good centre for touring WWII sites. Very interesting half day visiting US beaches and cemetery arranged through the Memorial Caen, also easy to get to Sword and the Commando Museum using public transport. Castle good to walk round. Other interesting old buildings. Good selection of restaurants.

Only in Caen for one night but what we saw looked very nice.Plenty of bars, restaurants and shops around the hotel which itself located near the railway station.

The Abbeys are stunning, the town is flat so easy to walk...
The Abbeys are stunning, the town is flat so easy to walk around. There are regular markets, the Sunday one we went to was quite big with lots of fresh food. The harbour is a nice spot with a line of bars and restaurants nearby, my favourite being an Irish bar (O'Donnells) for a well kept pint (or three) of Guinness!

Buzzing, historic, University city with something for everyone, whether you like eating out, shopping, parks or sightseeing. For a relaxing walk go to Parc de la Colline aux Oiseaux where you'll see a beautiful rose garden. Over the road is Memorial de Caen museum which is a must for all those interested in the events of the Normandy landings and more. For architecture, see the castle, the abbeys and townhall. If you are a coeliac, you must eat at Les Gens Heureux. The menu is very small, but the quality is exceptional. Try their cheesecake in particular.

A fantastically modern yet historical and vibrant city with excellent transport links. Lots of bars and restaurants offering a variety of food styles. Very welcoming and friendly. The local bus service is cheap and easy to use so you don't need a car. It's close to the Port. We hired bikes to go beyond the city and used the bus network to see other towns. This is such a great city you will not be disappointed with a short or long visit.

The staff were brilliant. We couldn’t find a booking anywhere in Caen, and then I found this property on booking.com. When we visited the hotel, we were informed that the hotel is fully booked. But the ladies at reception helped us find a room anyway, we were so grateful for them as they really went above and beyond to make sure we had a place to stay and sleep. Breakfast was also good. Hotel was clean snd comfortable. No complaints.

The person at the reception was very welcoming and super friendly! The hotel is located right in the centre of town, and the spa was a nice way to relax and warm up in rainy Caen. We'll have to come back to try the restaurant next time
