The Pride of Wales
Capital of Wales, Cardiff is a wonderfully green city steeped in national pride. At its heart is enormous Bute Park, divided by the River Taff and named after the marquis that once lived in Cardiff Castle overlooking it. In fact, this is just one of 5 castles within the surrounding area.
Over the road is Cathays Park, a beautiful square flanked by Edwardian architectural masterpieces including Cardiff City Hall and the excellent National Museum of Wales. Another must-see is St Fagan’s National History Museum, one of Britain’s top attractions.
From Victorian arcades to the fabulous St David’s Centre, shopping in Cardiff is a delight. And there’s no shortage of pubs and restaurants in which to rest awhile. Those by Cardiff Bay offer particularly pleasant views.
Also by the bay are the futuristic National Assembly for Wales and the Wales Millennium Centre. Another year 2000 landmark is the Millennium Stadium, a state-of-the-art venue for international rugby and football matches, as well as concerts. Next door is Cardiff Arms Park, home to the city’s rugby union team, while Cardiff City FC’s new stadium is in the west.
Cardiff Airport is further west near Barry and Booking.com have an excellent range of hotels, B&Bs and apartments both near there and in the city centre.

A 10 km walk around Cardiff Bay is well worth while if weather is good, as is a trip to the National Museum of Cardiff, and attending evensong in LLandaff Cathedral - all entirely free!
I also enjoyed a day trip to the Brecon Beacons & Henrhyd Falls, but do wear boots as very wet underfoot (it was December!).
I also enjoyed a play in the Richard Burton theatre in Cardiff, a performance of the excellent Risca Male Voice choir in Crosskeys - only a short train ride away.
Overall a very walkable city with good public transport links.

Unfortunately it was a bad day to travel by train. We arrived 3.5 hours late due to cancelled trains and diversions. Sadly we lost time to explore the city properly and it was pouring down.
It was a treat to discover the Vivienne Westwood store! Out of my budget but a great to see all the iconic clothes.
The Castle Arcade looked stunning with the Christmas lights and we really enjoyed the ambiance in the Rum&Fizz bar. We ate at The Ivy Asia as they had a set menu for £19.95 before 5pm. Food was great, decor was stunning.
We went to a concert at the Utilita Arena, well organised but expensive drinks and not great acoustics unfortunately.
Sadly we had to get a morning train home so still couldn’t do any shopping as the stores don’t open until 9.30.
We’d really like to return to Cardiff at some point to explore a bit more

Plenty of restaurants & bars to choose from. Great for shopping & I recommend
Cardiff market.
The castle is a main feature in the city..
Visited the New Theatre.
Walked to the Bay & around Mermaid Quay. Worth a vist. Walked to Roath Park lake. Felt safe in the city, as a solo traveller.

We went to see the Christmas markets. The town with stalls was great, winter wonderland was a little disappointing as you are not allowed dogs, although we had already gone in, walked round, sat and got a drink, then were told we had to leave! However, we walked to the castle which was beautiful and very dog friendly. Lovely warm bar and friendly staff.

All the shops are close together, with lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. Lovely to walk by the castle, close in the town. The park had a nice cafe, which was open in November, a nice change.

Location was good in that it was about20 min walk to Cardiff bay and 25 min to city centre. However, the area house is in is quite run down with many bags of waste piled outside houses. Rooms large and kitchen and dining area feel smart and practical.
