Heraklio is the Big City on Crete.
Heraklio is the Big City on Crete. That said and while it is lovely there are more enjoyable towns and getting around is relatively easy. 4 -5 days in Heraklio was enough for us and the lure of other Cretan places was greater. Overall the Cretan people are mostly welcoming which is heartening given the numbers of tourists going there that must drive them crazy at times!

Heraklion has a lot of car and bike traffic.
Heraklion has a lot of car and bike traffic. It is like peak hour in Sydney constantly. Parking is horrendous. I would recommend staying out of Heraklion. Drive to Knossos Palace, but go early. The other attraction for us was the Archaeological Museum. Get a uber or taxi to that. The foreshore looks like they gave up on it years ago. After Chania, Heraklion was a disappointment.

Of the 3 major cities, Heraklion has the most interesting sites and museums - especially the Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Science .
Rethymnon was the most relaxing and romantic.
Chania was far too touristy, but the Natural History Museum is excellent with exhibits well-titled in English

If you d like something simple Kakamaki in city centre has deliciously tasty bites to grab and run

Heraklion town is an interesting place.
Heraklion town is an interesting place. We did hop on hop off bus but there was not lot to see. We visited Knossos palace . We felt 3 days was ample . On our next visit we may visit the other towns in Crete.

The hotel was located very near to the centre of town. Staff were friendly and helpful and the self parking was great. An excellent breakfast with fresh juice, good coffee and the best range of fresh baked cakes and tarts.
The only problem with Heraklion is the aircraft that need to depart over the town from the airport, we didn't notice this when inside the hotel but certainly noticed it when outside. Still a great town to visit and an good hotel to stay. Easy drive to Knossos.

Enjoyed our stay at this great hotel with the family! Great hotel, amazing staff and great location! 5 minute walk to the ferry port, 10 min walk into the city centre, bus stop conveniently right outside. Excellent location! Staff is super friendly and gave us the best advice to see the city, recommendations and assistance when needed. Thank you again to Christina, Sofia, Gregoris and the team! Will definitely visit again, you made our stay in Crete so memorable.

In absolutely first class position for access to the main eating, strolling, shopping area. Also for access to hop on- hop off buses.
Breakfast was excellent, with good choices and very helpful staff. One point; I dislike cream in my tea and coffee so if small jugs could be available to get some milk, would be helpful.

I liked the location, the staff and the breakfast. It is located very close to the city centre, the staff was very friendly and accommodating and breakfast was very good. There was no parking, but some private parking spots near the hotel made me a special offer.
