Cracking City of Craic
Welcoming Galway is a small city with fantastic nightlife and an infectious atmosphere. Outside of the Galway Arts Festival, there’s still plenty of live music in the Irish pubs to get the party started.
The Galway Races at Ballybrit Race Course west of Galway Airport attract a good crowd, as does Eyre Square, a green space with flags of previous ruling families who gave it its nickname - City of Tribes. To the south are cobbled streets housing brightly coloured shops and restaurants.
Sights in Galway include its cathedral and city museum which offers an interesting insight into the history of the city and Ireland. Lynch’s Castle is the last remaining 17th-century merchant house, and the Spanish Arch is a small section of city walls by the Corrib River, linking Galway Bay to huge Loch Corrib. Where river and ocean meet is Claddagh Park, a great spot for a picnic with a view.
Further around the coast is Salthill Promenade, home to Atlantaquaria, Ireland’s national aquarium, focussing on sealife off Irish shores. It’s a Christmas Day tradition to jump from Blackrock Diving Tower nearby into the icy Atlantic Ocean, though you may well spot some wag giving it a go.

Eyre Square has been transformed into a magical Christmas food festival. The carousel ride was an authentic carousel victorian in style and charming—and for €5, it’s more than enough to enjoy a few moments of escaping to our inner child. The giant Ferris Wheel at night offered a breathtaking view of twinkling Christmas lights that dotted the cityscape, turning Eyre Square into a magical Christmas scene.
West is best, they say, and well, I can't argue with that. Galway is a beautiful county, especially at Christmas time. Take a stroll around this historic city, share a drink with family or friends, and enjoy Galway during the festive season. Well done to everyone who put it all together!

It’s possible my favourite city in Ireland to visit for the atmosphere and music. As I’m from Ireland I’ve been to Galway many times and I not only love the city but the scenic locations are soooo beautiful. So much to see and do in Galway
For food , I have to say The Pasta Factory was one of my favorite restaurants. It is also a take away. Great for anyone who is vegan

The cathedral is a site to behold,so tranquil and the rose glass is beautiful.
The walk along the corrib river was wild,and it's speed is breathtaking.
St Nicholas church had a small market on the Saturday with local produce available.
If planning to eat out in the evening,booking is essential.
We had the most delicious meal at the Venice restaurant on 11 Abbey Street lower.
Highly recommend this place and excellent choices to suit all tastes.
O Connells bar and Thirteen on the green are a must if you like watching all sports.
Go early if a big game is being televised if you want a seat.
Finally everything is within walking distance and very easy to find your way about.

Had a great time, wasn't overly impressed with the Christmas market, it was "ok". But the area around it, have plenty of places to shop, get some great food and drink, enjoy the atmosphere.....loved that! We stayed on the outskirts of town, the traffic in and out of Galway city center was a little congested, glad it was on the taxi drivers and tour bus operators and not me except on arrival and leaving. Otherwise, a great bit of craic!

We selected The Western Hotel for it's location to City Center. Visited for the Christmas Market and we were not disappointed. The location was great! The hotel was lovely, staff were all very friendly and helpful. We were most appreciative for the car park and it was handled very well with lots of guests. The room was very comfortable and the bathroom was spotless! I would absolutely stay at The Western Hotel when returning to Galway.

Ann was the sweetest host we had so far. She is so funny, really enjoyed talking to her. Everything was more than perfect. Room was super comfy, shower worked perfectly fine, breakfast was the best we had im Ireland so far, she made us feel like home.
And the location is just great. 10 minutes walk into the city centre.
We were very sad we had to leave and will definitely come back ❤️

Very comfortable room and bed. Nice decor in the bedrooms. Breakfast was excellent and the food in the restaurant and bar was very tasty. Staff were vey friendly and courteous throughout our stay. Ample parking at the hotel along with a very convenient city bus stop across the road from the hotel which was ideal for visiting the city centre and Salthill.

Everything! We had the chance to also use the hot tub outside the hotel. Amazing experience here, extremely well located as well, near bus and train station, walking distance from city center, about 10min max. Room extremely comfy!
