Nothing flashy or overdone, but the improvements are noticeable and thoughtful. They clearly care about keeping the space fresh and clean. Calcutta or Kolkata is a city with contradictions. It has intriguing colonial history. But going around Kolkata is a challenge.
We loved the British structures around the city including the vibrant Part Street. A drink at Trinca's is a must. Food is varied and yummy esp. Bengali cuisine (Sonar Tori in Salt Lake mall is very good).
It is called the City of Joy but the cleanliness could be much much better.
People are warm and friendly. A cruise over river Hoogly is a must.

I always enjoy visiting Kolkata, the city where i grew up in my early adulthood. Kolkata, The city of joy provides a friendly atmosphere to anyone who visits here. The city is dotted with many sight seeing places of importance.

I am not sure that what I love about Kolkata is what will appeal to others. I love the variety, the vibrance, the unexpected, the kindness of the people towards me as a foreigner. Don't just visit the known tourist sites. There are quirky museums, buzzing night markets and parks that bring a breath of fresher air (and opportunities for bird watching) where people will want to chat to you and tell you about their India.

Kolkata is an exceptional city. To enjoy it, one has to have an open mind. It is a very crowded city and can be jarring sometimes. One has to look for hidden delights and tucked away gems. So explore.

This a very old city of mixed culture.
This a very old city of mixed culture. This is called "City of Joy". This is a very crowded city. But one should be careful while moving. Various restaurants with affordable price is available including street food. Convenience are cheap to move around. People in general are helpful to foreigners.

A lot to see and doing some guided tours recommended. It is hot, humid and possibly raining so need to pace yourself.
If you're visiting during festivals it can be very busy.
Highlights for us were the flower market, Howrah bridge and station, visiting the pandals during Durga Puja, the booksellers on College street and browsing the multiple markets and shopping malls (air conditioned.)

One of the Best Stays Ever!
I stayed at Hotel Suitcase for 2 days and had an amazing experience. The service was top-notch, and the staff were polite and always ready to help. What truly stood out was the attached kitchen—fully equipped, so I could cook whatever I liked, which gave a homely feel. The location is also a big plus—just walking distance from Kalighat Mandir and very close to the jatin metro station. The dormitory infrastructure is clean, modern, and comfortable. Very affordable, Highly recommended for anyone visiting Kolkata!

It is officially THE CLEANEST hotel I have ever lived in India! And I really mean it! They sanitate room after every single guest with some disinfection liquids, wash the floor and clean the bathroom utilities. It was a blessing! Breakfast is delivered to the room, you can choose from variety of options - all of them were tasty.
The personnel is also very helpful! I 100% recommend this hotel for stay in Kolkata!

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was very comfortable. We used the salon which was very good. The food was good, but not the best breakfast we have had in India. The location was excellent - walking distance to many attractions. The hotel helped us find an excellent guide.
