Spiritual Sanctity in the Umbrian Hills
Assisi is world famous for the 2 saints – Francis and Clare – who were born here and subsequently founded Christian poverty movements. The tomb of the former is in the Basilica of St Francis, majestically located on a hill surveying the Umbrian countryside. Its graceful lines and powerful frescoes defy its 13th-century construction.
The Basilica of St Clare is from the same period and displays remains of the saint who inspired the Poor Clares. Between the 2 basilicas is the New Church, positioned where St Francis supposedly once lived, and the Cathedral of St Rufinus, dedicated to the saint who converted Assisi to Christianity.
Considerably older are the Roman villa remains near main Piazza del Comune, whose historic buildings house shops and pavements cafes on the site of the former forum. The columns of the Church of St Mary over Minerva were the entrance to a Roman temple.
Roman castle remains sit in the hills above Assisi, as does the more intact, medieval Rocca Maggiore which offers magnificent views over the town. Even higher is the Eremo delle Carceri, a stone hermitage where St Francis apparently preached to birds.
The cobbled streets ascending Assisi’s hills contain most of Booking.com’s accommodation options, including luxury hotels, cheap apartments and B&Bs near Santa Maria degli Angeli train station.

Assisi is so beautiful and so special. We have been here over twenty times... it just a very amazing place to come for prayer time and to enjoy a sacred place were saints like Francis and Clare were born and live. so very special place that we never get tire to visit.

An amazing place.
An amazing place. One has to be there to appreciate this surreal Franciscan town. There were lots of tourists when we were there but there are plenty of tranquil and peaceful places away from the crowds. We really enjoyed our dinners at 2 local restaurants. Small bars in the alleys offer good food and wines and perfect for people-watching.

I was only 5_6 days
It was very short. You should stay at least two weeks.
I am glad that Avatar Meher Baba has been in Assisi in the 19th century too. A Diamond in a diamond city.
One could meditate on Avatar Meher Baba, Saint Francis of Assisi and Claris.

Great place for at least a 3 day stay.
Great place for at least a 3 day stay. There are cultural events, incredible churches and monuments to visit. Just walking around and discovering small streets and hidden secret places as you climb high to Santa Clara's Church and relish in the incredible view of the valley.
Great places to eat, to shop special things and to sit somewhere for a coffee just relaxing, enjoying the views and just doing nothing.

I loved the simplicity of San Damiano and the St. Francis stories in the place where he started his ministry. The highlight was a visit to St. Francis' forest trail. Brother wind accompanied us!

For our almost three-week trip in Italy, Mauro's home was one of those that left the most positive impressions and memories for us! The independent apartment on the second floor of the house has everything you need for a short or long stay! The air conditioner worked well and managed to cool around him. Clean bathroom, well-stocked fridge and wide selection of coffee! A beautiful and well kept garden where the pool and sunbeds next to it were an added bonus. During the hot day, our two kids didn’t get out of the water for two hours.

The breakfast was amazing, the table on which is the food is replenished promptly. You can choose sweet or savoury whichever you fancy. Very good coffee is available. Adults and children enjoy it very much.
The location is amazing with a view of Saint Francis’ basilica.
The lovely office staff is very kind and helpful.
We loved everything about this place and definitely if we visit Assisi again we will book this hotel again.
