World-class cuisine is what Bologna does best. Nowhere in Italy, a country with considerable culinary heritage, is the food considered better than in this medieval gem.
Bolognese sauce of course originated here, but to try the real thing look out for ragú on the menu. Cold meats and cheeses are also exquisite. Make sure you save plenty of time for eating – the Bolognese like to savour their food, so a meal can last for hours.
Many of the best eateries and homemade ice cream shops can be found behind the mile upon mile of porticoed streets, now UNESCO World Heritage listed. The complex of medieval churches and buildings in cobbled Piazza Santo Stefano is a tranquil spot to explore. Climb one of the Two Towers nearby (not the one leaning at a startling angle) for spectacular views over this red-roofed city.
The focal point of Bologna is huge Piazza Maggiore, whose Santo Petronio church has an unimpressive, half-finished façade that doesn’t prepare you for its sheer scale inside. Fanning out from this square are the buildings of Europe’s oldest university, founded in 1088 and home to the city’s best museums.

Bologna has become a little more expensive than on previous visits, but generally a really interesting place to visit with great rail links to other towns. From Bologna we have visited Ferrara, Ravenna, Parma, Forli and Imola for day trips.
Plenty of museums etc. to visit, would recommend a walking tour on your first day for orientation purposes. WE always use the Free Walking Tours on offer.
Good food easy to find and have always felt safe walking around.

Bologna is a great city.
Bologna is a great city. Full of interesting architecture and art. The small streets off the Piazza Maggiore are so full of great food shops, eateries and bars that you really don't have to venture further afield. Of you do, the buses are so easy to use but really the centre is contained it's easy to walk to most places.

I was attending a conference (business) so my focus was not on tourism. However, I did have two guided walking tours around the city center and I also spent some hours walking the city on my own. I can recommend taking a walking tour. (I took the "free" walking tour in English; the guide made it a very worthwhile experience.)
There is definitely a lot to see in Bologna, particularly, if you are interested in medieval history. Bologna city centre is walkable. It is also easy to take busses, although I did not find it easy to get an overview of the bus network.

Food is great, if you are not from Italy the taxi app, cannot be activate with a non Italian number. Took it up and they are working on it. Takes forever to get hold of BTaxi. Despite this taxi drivers were nice and professional. Not easy to get around. Also there is a city tax on hotels and a service tax when you sit down to eat. Some nice places. Overall not good service at the tourist area especially the anatomical room. Seriously rude reception. Shopping is great, overall enjoyed but will avoid going. Too expensive with hidden tax.

Bologna is a large and lively city with plenty to see and do. There’s no shortage of great food options for gastronomy lovers, interesting sights, and excellent shopping. The city feels reasonably clean and well-kept, and while the architecture is nice, it doesn’t stand out compared to other Italian destinations.
The biggest downsides are the traffic and public transport. Traffic jams are frequent and can be frustrating, and the bus system is unreliable, with routes that run late or seem to follow no clear schedule.
Overall, Bologna offers a solid experience with good food and lots of activity, but some practical aspects can make getting around a challenge.

Rooms in perfect condition, modern, comfortable and with a well equipped bathroom.
A very central location, just a few steps from the Bologna main train station (where also the Marconi Express monorail train from the airport arrives and departs). Cafés and restaurants close by and city centre in walking distance (15 min)

Hotel courtesy bus stops running from midday to 9.00 pm €30 from airport then €60 return to go into Bologna.
Staff are not friendly or even pleasant to guests arriving or departing appearing totally disinterested !! Not a very pleasant experience at the end of our beautiful holiday in Italy . Wouldn’t stay here again !

Modern hotel, light and bright. Very clean, spacious, comfortable room. Minute from the start of the main road up to the plaza, minutes from the express to the airport, so well situated.
On a main road, so some traffic noise not enough to keep you awake after walking Bologna all day tho !

We stayed in Bologna so we could attend the Formula One in Imola four days. The hotel was perfect because was an easy walk to the train station, nice restaurants and attractions. The room and bathroom particularly the shower was bigger than most hotel rooms in Italy.
