I recently stayed at Nishadi Holiday Inn, Katharagama, for two nights, and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. The place is very clean, peaceful, and well-maintained. The owner, Mr. Dasan, was extremely helpful — he even arranged a full-day Yala Block 5 safari for us, which turned out to be an unforgettable experience! We saw leopards, elephants, crocodiles, deer, peacocks, and many more animals.
Mr. Dasan also organized a tuk-tuk for us to visit Kataragama Devalaya and Kiri Vehera, which was very convenient.
The food was excellent — we had delicious Sri Lankan rice and curry for dinner and a very tasty breakfast the next morning. Honestly, it was one of the best local meals I’ve had in Sri Lanka!
The room was spacious, the bathroom was very clean, and everything felt new and comfortable.
If you’re planning a Yala Block 5 safari or visiting Kataragama, I highly recommend Nishadi Holiday Inn. It’s a perfect place to stay — peaceful, clean, and with great hospitality.

DenmarkFarm Villa Resort is a true gem in Kataragama — a fantastic resort in a lovely location, surrounded by peaceful countryside and just a short drive from Yala National Park.
The villas are modern, extremely spacious, and well-equipped with Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and all essential amenities. We especially loved the beautiful swimming pool that overlooks the serene fields — the perfect spot to relax after a day of exploring. The Sri Lankan rice and curry lunch was one of the best we've ever had — absolutely delicious and full of flavor! Every meal we had was fresh and satisfying.
What made our stay truly special was the incredibly friendly and attentive staff who made us feel welcome and cared for from start to finish.
This resort offers true value for money, and I can’t recommend it enough to anyone planning a stay in Kataragama. We will definitely return!

We’re really glad we chose the Mailagama Cinnamon Residence for our stay in Kataragama. The staff treated us with great respect and warm hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed the hoppers dinner with its absolutely delicious curries. We must also mention that the curd and honey were the best we’ve ever had.

It is a holy place visited by Buddhists and Hindus alike.
It is a holy place visited by Buddhists and Hindus alike. Some Muslims also visit a mosque located in the sacred area. Buddhist usually visit the Kiri Vehera area first and then come to the Devale premises. There are circular roads to facilitate that sequence. Otherwise, one can walk to the Devale premises and then proceed to the Kiri Vehera premises. There are lot of boutiques selling various items including offerings for Devale. They are located in the town area. After that one has to cross a small bridge over the Menik River to enter the sacred area. Over the years both sides of the river have been re-organized for a better sequential experience.

Kataragama itself is a temple town and that’s pretty much it. Other than that it’s a jumping off point for safari in yala and kumana.
One day is more than enough for cultural/religious aspects. The Perahara (pageant) in July is fantastic. Be warned that it may not start till midnight and may need pre booked tickets. Also watch out for pickpockets in crowded areas around this time.
The country side and the rural life as well as the wildlife is fantastic and authentic.
Quite hot and sunny year round but dec to feb is more comfortable.

I thought it was a different place to go for Safari.
I thought it was a different place to go for Safari. But, almost all vehicles come from Tissa for Safari pickup so it doesn't really matter if you book a room in Tissa or Katharagama for the Safari.

Even though it is a religious hub that connects all the religions to a one place, I enjoyed the YALA Safari very much. Spotted all most all the animals from water birds to hundreds of peacocks, from mongoose to leopard and elephants.

Now Kataragama is to easy to reach through Southern Expressway. It's just some 30km+ from Mattala Exit., Kiriwehera, Kataragama Devalaya, Sella Kataragama and Wedasiti Kanda are main religious' attraction points. We had our dinner from Hotel sunflower and Lunch @ P&S Kataragama

It's a large old hotel, catering to the many pilgrims who travel through Kataragama. But they were very welcoming to we Western tourists! We took a room with a private balcony, but it was a claustrophobic small area out the back, the large shared terrace at front was much more attractive.
Because they are not catering to Westerners, the price is very good value. As everywhere, the staff were so kind, helpful and welcoming, in spite of little English being spoken. There is also a pool! (though we didn't use it).

Large clean hotel rooms. Spacious bathroom. Hot water is running smoothly. A/C is new and working nicely. A ceiling fan is also available. Very comfortable bed (spring mattresses) and pillows.
Convenient and quiet location - walking distance to Katharagama devalaya. 8 minutes drive to Kiriwehera temple.
The hotel staff arranged a Yala safari tour for us within a short notice.

Rooms are clean with comfortable beds. Staff were really friendly and helpful. You can order food for all 3 means and there are 2 dine in areas. All meals were delicious and billed at a reasonable price. I can highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a place to stay near Kataragama.
