We were very surprised on the "new" area of the hotel where we were lodged, it's really nice, ask for the new rooms. Do consider that there are a lot of marches going to the Zocalo and it might be difficult to leave the hotel.

An absolutely magnificent and exceptional place. The Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico is a true gem in the heart of Mexico City. From the moment you walk in, you are mesmerized by its beauty - the stunning Art Nouveau stained glass ceiling, the original iron elevator, and the elegant architecture by Adamo Boari. Every detail reflects history, charm, and timeless elegance. The service is impeccable, the rooms are beautifully decorated, and the rooftop view is breathtaking. A historic and architectural treasure not to be missed when visiting Mexico City.

FAQs about hotels in Mexico City

Aztec Capital and Vibrant Metropolis

As one of the biggest cities in the world, Mexico City could be better described as an experience than a city. Founded in 1325 by the Aztecs as Tenochtitlan, it was both destroyed and rebuilt by the Spanish in the 16th century. Nowadays, it is the capital of the United Mexican States and its most important economic and cultural center.

The city center’s cornerstone is the famous Plaza de la Constitución, commonly called Zócalo. It's surrounded by the presidential Palacio Nacional and the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral.

The Avenida de la Reforma was built under the brief rule of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria, while the deposed president Porfirio Díaz left a characteristic fusion of French-Mexican architecture. The 1960s saw a demographic explosion that only now is starting to be completely absorbed.

From the Chapultepec Parks and the chic Polanco, to the gay area of Zona Rosa and the Bohemian and intellectual Coyoacán: let Mexico City tell you its thousand secrets and stories.

Most of the hotels are located around the Reforma area, the Insurgentes Avenue and the Zócalo. If you’re looking for 5-star hotels in Mexico City, the modern Santa Fe area has a recently redeveloped business sector.

The city is huge and pretty intense, especially around Centro Historico. Coyoacan is quieter and very nice. Bring cash! Lots of cash. Allow extra travel time around the city, particularly in rush hour. Uber is cheaper than local taxis.

Fascinating place.

Fascinating place. I highly recommend beginning your visit with an early morning guided tour+breakfast of the chinampas in Xochimilco, with a company like Arca Tierra that does not use motorized trajineras. The historical perspective in this introduction to CDMX was wonderful. It also sets a more mindful and contemplative framework for the rest of your site seeing. Much respect to the govt and people of Mexico and CDMX for their efforts to preserve and restore pre-colonial history and traditions and archeological sites.

Between work and vacations, I've been to Mexico City perhaps 10 times, so I feel I have a decent perspective on it. For foodies, fans of art and culture and those who appreciate a mild climate in the winter, CDMX is pretty hard to beat. It's a 5-6 hour flight from anywhere in Canada, only a couple of time zones different at most and a much richer cultural experience than anywhere else I can think of that is remotely similar in terms of convenience. A week-long or even long weekend visit from Canada or the US is completely feasible. The most obvious cultural sites to visit would include the pyramids at Teotehuacán, the National Anthropology Museum, various locations around the city where Diego Rivera's murals can be found (the Ministry of Education exhibit is my favourite), the Frida Kahlo home / museum (plus a walk around Coyoacán and San Ángel while there), the historic centre (including the Zócalo, the Cathedral, the Templo Mayor, the National Palace), Chapultepec Park, a Sunday morning stroll along Reforma (when cars are prohibited). From a location in Condesa or Roma many of these are easily accesible on foot. Uber service is great. Incredible restaurants, from inexpensive comida callejera to pricey and deluxe. And most of all, very nice people in general. There are endless commercial guides online but also quite a few very useful ones provided by the government. In print, I like the Moon Guide.

The location can’t be beat, right where you want to be when visiting Mexico City. La Condesa/Roma is where it’s at with people, restaurants, cafes, and some of the most beautiful parks in DF and a neighborhood full of architectural gems, including many Art Deco apartment buildings. So I loved it! That being said, the room I booked at the hotel was on the small side, and while the bed was very comfortable, the pillows were hard and gave me a headache. I mentioned to staff when leaving and I hope they correct this
