We love the area and have been visiting for years.
We love the area and have been visiting for years. Fell in love with the area during numerous scuba diving trips. Some of the best diving on the East Coast. Many great seafood restaurants. Fort Macon State Park is a must-see for people that like history. Very interesting place to visit, The NC State aquarium in Pine Shoals is one of our favorite aquariums. The historic Beaufort water front is also worth a visit. It contains a lot of local small shops, the NC maritime museum, great restaurants and charters to see the wild horses, dolphins, Cape Lookout and sunsets. Beaches are also very nice.

This is a quiet little beach town during the off-season.
This is a quiet little beach town during the off-season. It has things to do, but it is not a place that has all kinds of entertainment things to do. If you like going to the beach, enjoying the beach, and eating at some great local restaurants that have a variety of food, then this is a place that you want to check out.

The Cox's Restaurant and Molly's were both great places to enjoy meals. Were not too expensive and had very good wait staff and food did not disappoint.
Molly's not only allowed dining on the water front pier but also free access to walk out and watch the fishermen on the pier.
The beach area was not overly crowded this time of year which was great. The weather was great while we were visiting.
The area was only a short distance from other beaches and great shopping places as well.

AB is nice, it's not a very long walk from parking to water...
AB is nice, it's not a very long walk from parking to water which comes in handy when you're hauling chairs and coolers! Certain sections have a few restaurants/ bars but for the most part the stretch if beach is just beach house (no boardwalk or shops). One thing I did find odd about the beach is there's never any shells. It's just pulverized shells and rocks so if you make it into the water bring water shoes or your feet will hurt!
As for food.... the bite at the box is THE BEST! My kids beg to go there; affordable prices and large servings. Great sweet tea too! Friendly staff and the bar is nice too!
If you have a free afternoon check out the aquarium. It was very nice, a few interactive areas and nice displays. Helpful staff and the outdoor trail is very peaceful! Free parking. We went though the whole building and outside (including watching a diving show and watching the otters) in about 90 min. It's not very large but it is very nice! Worth checking out for sure!
Also worth mentioning fort Macon. Nice park and beach access. NOT for swimming at all -esp at the tip. The museum is very ....interesting... its a bit dated and kind of hoaky but it's something to do and free. There's a tours with a guide or you can freely roam. You can walk through the fort in certain sections as well at the top portion. The steps are tall and VERY very steep. There are NO guard rails on the top so it's not a place for small kids - especially if you have a runner!
It's a historical site and well preserved, a few areas to look at inside the building as well as a theater. Nice clean bathrooms as well!

If you want a quiet place that is safe with a good beach on...
If you want a quiet place that is safe with a good beach on the North Carolina coastline then it is a good place to go. If you are looking for a lively place with lots to do other than the beach not so much. If it rains there is not much to do. They have a small theater and a good aquarium very close by but not much else. So if the beach is your main thing and you are fortunate to have great weather than you will like it. The state park Fort Macon was a pleasant visit.

I liked my room last year, but not this year's.
I liked my room last year, but not this year's. The staff is super friendly and very accommodating. I recommend taking the Shackleford Ferry and tour to see the wild horses! Buy the bug wipes from the hotel, wear your bathing suit to swim, and bring something to put all your cool seashells in.
The pizza restaurant down the street is very delicious! There is a shopping center down the street that has everything you need: grocery store, Mexican and Chinese restaurant, ice cream store, and a movie theater!

The hotel is great! Friendly staff and rooms/suites are spacious and comfortable. Maybe a silly thing but what I liked in the bathroom was that you could choose between a hand held shower or a rain shower. Appreciated 👍
