The Hotel&Hostel Montarina occupies a historic Villa built around 1860, only 200 metres from the Lugano train station. The room location and facilities were exceptional. I have to add that I booked a single room and therefore was moved to the neighboring Continental Park Hotel. So just something to take into account.

Casa Calina has a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, garden, a shared lounge and terrace in Carona. Nice and affordable place for those who would like to enjoy the mountain and lake view from a nice yard or common balcony, cook their own food, hang out and potentially meet some people in a cozy common room.
