The old Japanese house was warm and homey and the hosts were kind and welcoming. Two cats were a bonus. Dinner at the Thai restaurant was exceptional and highly recommended! I would be back anytime and ideally would stay for longer!

She even got me a nice small surprise present before leaving as a souvenir!

Aso Base Backpackers is located in Aso, 33 km from Egao Kenko Stadium Kumamoto and 42 km from Kumamoto Castle. The 2-star hostel has air-conditioned rooms with a shared bathroom and free WiFi. A few minutes walk to Aso station with a couple of eateries around. The place was really clean and well maintained. Highly recommend!

Set in Tamana, 20 km from Hirayama Hot Spring, HIKE offers air-conditioned accommodation and a shared lounge. Staying at this rebuilt hospital was a highlight of our journey. The atmosphere, materials, and lighting is very beautiful. We got very warmly welcomed and it was a pleasure to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner at the main floor restaurant. We definitely recommend it to spend some calm relaxing days! They also provide bicycles to discover the beautiful nature around or drive to a nearby onsen place or to the sea.
