Located in Nagaoka, 15 km from Hikone Castle, Guesthouse Izame Ann provides accommodation with free bikes, free private parking, a shared lounge and a bar. Well worth the effort to travel to experience a lovely ryokan, it's host and the town. I paid for dinner and I'm SO glad I did. It was a highlight of my stay and in deed a highlight of my 5 week trip in Japan. You sit in a sunken seating area and watch the ryokan owner/cook prepare what felt like a large number of individual dishes. The food was absolutely delicious. I was concerned about hearing other guests because, being an older house, the walls are thin - but the night I was there all the guests were respectfully quiet. I had a view over the "river" which may be a mis-nomer - but it is a peaceful stream running through the pretty street. I highly recommend a visit.

Featuring a garden, bar and views of mountain, Youth Hostel WANIHAMA-Beach side Lake BIWA is set in Otsu, 15 km from Sanzen-in Temple. We got a room with its own toilet and bathroom for a great price. Traditional tatami style room makes it feel very humble and homely. The staff was very friendly and accommodating - they drove us to the station very early in the morning.

Located in Hikone, 1.7 km from Hikone Castle, GUEST HOUSE NAGORIYA provides accommodation with a bar and free private parking. The owner is a great guy and the hostel is very charming. I slept well and had a great time.

GYPSY TAKASHIMA has free bikes, garden, a shared lounge and terrace in Katsuno. The property is around 33 km from Sanzen-in Temple, 40 km from Ruriko-in Temple and 42 km from Enryaku-ji Temple. Amazing value for a big room in a comfortable, hostel-style accommodation. Takashima is a very quiet and beautiful town on the lake, and this is the perfect place to stay. Highly recommended!!

Staff was amiable and very helpful. It was situated directly on the waterfront and there is a great waterfall just a short hike away.
