From July 1, 2024, visitors to the city who stay overnight in Cologne's accommodation establishments will pay accommodation tax, regardless of whether the overnight stay is absolutely necessary for business or not. Unlike in the past, it will no longer be necessary to provide information about the purpose of the trip on a form at check-in. The tax rate will remain unchanged at five percent of the accommodation price.

The following are exempt from taxation:

People who are dependent on temporary accommodation in a lodging establishment because they have lost their home due to fire or water damage, for example.

Refugees who are assigned accommodation in accommodation establishments.

School trips approved by the school management

Overnight stays of persons due to medically necessary treatment and necessary accompanying persons upon request

The duration of taxation is also changing. With effect from July 1, 2024, the overnight accommodation tax will be levied for a maximum of six months in the case of uninterrupted accommodation, for example in the same hotel. Rentals extending beyond this period will continue to be subject to the second home tax. There will be no double taxation.
