At the bottom of an indrawn and sheltered cove on the north-eastern side of the island lies the town of Vis. The town developed from older settlements Kut and Luka that were unified by building a church of Our Lady of Spilica in the 16th century. In the Second World War the island was a military zone and considering the fact tourism started developing after the demilitarization after the Croatian war of independence – when the town and the island opened for tourists and visitors from abroad. The town has 2000 inhabitants while the whole island has a population of 3500 people. Many visitors, out of which yachtsmen are the most numerous ones, visit this island more and more every year.
