Campobasso is a city made up of an old part of medieval origin, rich in historical and artistic values, situated on the slope of a hill dominated by the Monforte castle, and a more modern and elegant part, dating from the 19th century, situated on the plain at the foot of the old town centre. The old town centre spreads out in a fan-shape around the castle, which dominates the town. It is made up of long, winding alleys and stairways, flanked by stone houses and buildings, often with characteristic inner courtyards. Numerous portals are richly decorated, with coats of arms of noble families and allegorical figures. The nineteenth-century town, known as the Murattiano centre, stretches out flat and has the typical features of urban development in that historical period. Designed according to the ideal of the garden city, it has many green spaces and fountains.
