Tulbagh, one of South Africa’s oldest towns, traces its roots back to the first settlements in 1699, with the town officially established in 1743. Steeped in history and adorned with charming architecture, it offers a timeless glimpse into the past. Nestled among picturesque mountains and serenaded by early morning birdsong, Tulbagh is the perfect place to unwind—just 90 minutes from Cape Town. Interesting fact : The Tulbagh Earthquake of 1969 was one of South Africa’s most destructive quakes, striking on 29 September with a magnitude of 6.3. It devastated the towns of Tulbagh, Ceres, and Wolseley, caused widespread damage to historic buildings, and led to 12 fatalities. So powerful it was felt as far away as Durban and Upington. For Tulbagh, it was both a tragedy and a turning point, while many historic buildings were damaged, the subsequent restoration helped preserve the town’s unique Cape Dutch, Victorian, and Edwardian architecture for future generations.
