FAQs about hotels in Umbria

Hilltop Towns Ringing with Music

One of Italy’s smallest regions, fabulous Umbria has stunning hilltop towns, rolling vineyards and magnificent architecture to rival its more famous neighbour Tuscany.

The capital Perugia is a university town whose cobbled centre houses medieval art, steep streets and shops selling locally made chocolate. It also hosts a jazz festival, while the annual Festival of the Two Worlds is in Spoleto, a town with a hilltop castle and well-preserved Roman theatre.

Remains of a Roman theatre are also in walled Gubbio, one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval towns. North-east, Città di Castello has excellent galleries and a church visible for miles around. The same is true of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, dedicated to the saint who lived in poverty. Ironically, this hillside town has one of the few 5-star Umbria hotels.

Foligno has a peaceful river and further south Terni is near the multi-level Marmore waterfalls. Orvieto on a sheer escarpment to the north-west houses the jewel in the Umbrian crown – a fantastic cathedral with a gold-mosaic façade.

To the north, jutting into Lake Trasimeno on a piece of land that was once an island, is Castiglione del Lago. In the east, tranquil Norcia in the foothills of the Monti Sibillini National Park houses some of the many Umbria hotels in the countryside on Booking.com.

We periodically visit Perugia when we are in Italy. It's the right size hilltop town if you want meander for 2, 3 days. It's large enough for you to have lots of things to do and see, and small enough for you to manage the layout. One of our favorite cities in Italy.

I was unlucky as that day there was a strike at Roma Termini and most of the trains were cancelled. Finally, I was able to get on a train to arrive at very late afternoon. I wasted my half day at the train station. It was very cold and foggy the night before and the following day so I can't view much. However, I still able to visit many basilica/churches in Assisi.

The quintessential Italian village -- so much history with beautiful cobblestone streets, amazing cafes and quaint shops. We were there for a family baptism and every venue accommodated our large groups with advance planning. Completely gracious and wonderful -- I will definitely return. It's a hidden gem.

Terni is a wonderful city.

Terni is a wonderful city. In my opinion it's a hidden gem of Italy. It's an easy 1-hour train ride from Rome, and on the way to all the northern Italian cities. Terni Centro has almost no cars, so incredibly walking friendly, full of cafes, gelaterias, and pizza. All, with picture book old Italian architecture. Also, Terni really comes alive after 4pm!

Such a nice historic town with beautiful walls, churches and piazza. Nice food and restaurants and cosy bars. We stayed one night. Julia, the hostess, was outstandingly helpful and she spoke very good English. The dinner and breakfast were particularly good. We ate dinner outdoors but in good shade from the evening sun. There is a large swimming pool which has a superb view. I highly recommend Romitorio agriturismo.

We had Montefalco on our 10 days travel through Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany mostly because of the wines produced in the area. They did not disappoint, and the town itself was certainly worth a visit for those who enjoy the hill town environment and great food and drink. We traveled in November, and were happy that crowds were not a problem. It was cool but not too cold, and we did not need a reservation for dinner. As a bonus, we got to see the pope on his travel there- joined a happy group of residents on the sidewalk waiting to see him. We will be learning Italian for the next trip but found that residents were happy to work with us to help us make ourselves understood.
