There were too many tourists (in August) Not as many as in Lisbon, but still more than I would have liked. Getting dinner without a reservation was difficult. If driving, the streets are very narrow, mostly one way with parked cars, and quite difficult to negotiate. it's vital to tuck in your side mirror when parking, or it will be hit by a passing car. Walking is also an adventure as many sidewalks are less than one person wide. Restaurant and bar opening days and times seem to be arbitrary. We found one good bar the first night but it was closed every time we tried to go back.Guest review byDavidUnited States - 10.0

This is a historic town with interesting architecture, cute stores, good restaurants and a beautiful park area where (out on the point) where you can walk. We thought it had a lot more interest than towns on San Miquel island.Guest review byKarenUnited States - 10.0
What I love about Horta is that you feel like you are...
What I love about Horta is that you feel like you are entering an entirely different culture and way of living. I do not like traveling to areas where I feel it is American culture in a foreign place. If I go again I would definitely make more of an effort in learning the language enough to carry on small conversations. Breakfast was a culture shock for me. I am used to protein shakes and toast in the morning. They do not eat breakfast that way. There was only one place that served omlettes or eggs but even there it was not close enough to an American breakfast. Lunch and dinner were fine. If you will be there for a week or more I highly suggest you go to the grocery store for breakfast items like milk, cereal, bread etc. The pastries at the various bakeries are to die for. I have put on weight despite heavy walking.Guest review byAmyUnited States - 10.0
Madalena is an awesome place to spend time in.
Madalena is an awesome place to spend time in. You can book acitivities with agencies near the port. There are a couple of really good restaurants. Pico wine is amazing! During my stay in Pico (may) the weather was extremely changing and it was very hard to plan activities such a hiking Mt. Pico that depends on the weather. The temperature could feel like 30c while it was sunny and felt like 10c when cloudy and rainy. The same goes for the wind. Averall worth the experience tho. :)Guest review byMartinCanada - 10.0
We wanted an authentic, non-touristy area to base ourselves.
We wanted an authentic, non-touristy area to base ourselves. That’s Ribeira Grande. Pretty town with all amenities (grocery, laundry, museums), gorgeous town square and walkability. Nice access to rest of island for hikes. Friendly locals. Chocolatino, Tukatula, O Canadiano, Pacheco, casa de Pasto Flor-all great restaurants for varying appetites. Azores Brewing-excellent beer and fun vibe.Guest review byTimUnited States - 10.0
A very comfortable and pleasant town for living and staying,...
A very comfortable and pleasant town for living and staying, with very nice people, and an overall good atmosphere. There is enough to see and to enjoy, from food, ice-creams, and cafes. It also has a lovely small market where you can eat as well, and opposite a garden with a nice sitting area. It has all possible shops, a large grocery, it's surrounded by hills, and much green. There are many very nice old houses, nicely renovated We are not young, so I can't say. There is a very nice and spacious beach with fine black sand The town is a little bit on a hill, but by walking down, you can enjoy a very nice view of the sea. This is also the heart of the town. Another good trip is a walk the monup the hill to ument. It can be walked from both sides, both offering very nice views all around. Moving around without a car is quite difficultGuest review byJIRINASlovakia - 8.0

São Roque is very spread out, so a car is needed if you stay outside the heart of the village. Most restaurants were closed, so dining out was tricky (end of March). It is worth staying in a self catering place when going off season. The minimarket by the fire-station is well stocked. Safe swimming spot at the Naval Club. Close to hiking trails.Guest review byOdilePortugal - 10.0
The best place to stay on Sao Miguel.
The best place to stay on Sao Miguel. You can easily walk to Lake Furnas and Parque Grená which has lots of waterfalls. There are thermal springs you can visit at both Terra Nostra and Poça da Dona Beija (which was great at night time). Espinha cocktail bar was lovely as was Terra Nostra Restaurant. You could spend a whole day walking around the area where there are parks with geothermal activity and a beautiful church in the centre. We ate in a lot and there are lots of lovely bakeries in the town and supermarkets.Guest review byAnonymous - 8.0
Velas was a nice quite town. There is lots to see and do.
Velas was a nice quite town. There is lots to see and do. Great hotels and friendly staff. There is a "pool" downtown at the seawall within the ocean due to rocks that have been placed, so you can swim. They have a stage where artists and singers can perform. Lots of cute shops with great merchansie to purchase, with easy streets to walk through. Lots of cobbled stones, so wear comfortable shoes. Great restaurants down cute little streets and lots of friendly people who want to help you regardless if you can speak portuguese or not.Guest review byPamelaUnited States - 10.0

It is a beautiful and historic building with so much character. It has calm and peaceful seating areas throughout where you can sit in comfort. They have the best breakfast and we relied on the banana for a snack as we were out and about during the day. This location is perfect for exploring the island as it is centrally located. We will definitely be backGuest review bySallyUnited Kingdom
