Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United KingdomThe hotel was very busy due to a wedding meaning there was nowhere to sit in the bar or other public areas which was a shame as it would have been nice to have had the chance to take in the ambience a bit more.
Interesting building in the heart of Dornoch. The staff were attentive and helpful.

United KingdomMy only negative was the window in my room did not open (sealed by paint) so room got a bit hot for my taste.
Beautiful old building with atmospheric bar. The drams left in my room from the distillery in the garden was a very welcome benefit.

United StatesI wish the room had been a bit cooler-we were lucky to have great weather but unfortunately having the windows open didn’t cool the room very much and allowed cigarette smoke from the patio below.
A beautiful property with a good restaurant and excellent location.

United KingdomLovely helpful and friendly staff. Great location. This is a castle so its old and the rooms and facilities are old fashioned - depends what you want from a hotel. Feels a little tired in places given the price. Absolutely nothing wrong with it however.

CanadaWas expecting a more "castle-y" interior whereas it had the exterior of a castle and interior has been renovated to look and feel like a Comfort Inn style hotel.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Cozy rooms. Located in quaint, little town. It's a castle! Breakfast was included and had a lot of options (fruit, bacon, eggs, pastry, cereal)

United KingdomIn the new part so quite noisy, could hear next doors dogs barking and people walking around. Not 100% clean, some crisps left on a chair. Didn’t realise that there was bacon & eggs till we’d filled our plate with cold meats and cheese, menu stated continental only.
Friendly staff, great food. Fantastic selection of whiskey!

United KingdomWe were disappointed in the choices for breakfast though. There was cereals, cold meats & fruit. Along with coffee and fruit juices. The cooked element was fried eggs and bacon. No other choices. We did ask about choices for eggs and was told that was the only choice.
The rooms are large and clean, the staff are friendly and welcoming. The surroundings are delightful. Dornoch is a lovely place to visit and there are places for walks. Even if you're not a golfer.

CanadaWe stayed in a 2 bedroom with a queen in one and twins in the other. One of the twin beds was shot, my sister had to put a pillow under her legs to even out the dip in the mattress. Staff was apologetic and was going to look into it and offered up a small bottle of scotch as a peace offering. On another point, the castle is completely renovated and the only indication you’re in a castle is from the outside. That was a disappointment for us.
Cute little cozy pub with great bartenders.

United KingdomThese are not dislikes, more some feedback to prompt action: Breakfast was a slightly strange experience; if you are strict vegetarian or vegan you will struggle for choice. Only hot food were eggs and bacon - where is the fabled Scottish breakfast so many other hotels offer and our one the day before put out for £12 (not the £15 or £20 the Castle charges)? No porridge - in the Highlands!! Small points - fresh milk is available with your in-room tea or coffee but you have to go back to reception to get it (from a top floor room, it wasn’t worth it) Reception desk is in the bar (not a problem until the bar is busy, as it was when we arrived on a Saturday evening when staff have a lot on and then you queue with bar customers to get staff attention)
Central location in Dornoch Large, comfortable, warm room Quiet location Beds comfortable Gown and slippers provided If you like whiskey, you have a couple of drams the hotel owners’ distillery output gratis in your room The staff helpfully located a spot for us to secure our bikes (but it’s not a specific secure bike area)
