We knew this going in, but it’s not very convenient to get in and out of town or to the beach, but this wasn’t an issue for us. The road in would be difficult in a normal car- if you’re renting, make sure to get an SUV!

Cocolia exceeded our expectations! We were worried about visiting during rainy season, but we lucked out with the weather. Yes, there were mosquitos and other jungle bugs, but we learned to co-exist. The team went above and beyond to make our stay special. We loved the roar of the ocean and the open view to the jungle and the ocean beyond— and we especially loved the open-air shower. Thank you to the staff for your kindness! We can’t wait to come back.

You are very at one with nature and so there are a lot of bugs - nothing the hotel can do but just beware that the bugs can impede relaxation. Food was a bit hit or miss

It was very beautiful and great value for money! Lovely staff, especially Abi! The shower!!! Good food included the corn chips and guacamole, pancakes, crusted fresh fish. The hot cacao! Loved the welcome drink.

It was a little more jungle than we anticipated. We knew the rooms were open, but didn't expect huge crickets in all our clothes, seeing tarantulas and scorpions in our room. We kept everything zipped up in our suitcase as to avoid critters. It was also a little further from town than we'd thought. The road up from town was very bad --so bad that taxis would not drive up it, but would drive all the way around the back way instead. We did walk down to Mermejita Beach, but it was very bleak and you cannot swim there.

The staff was very friendly and welcoming, even bringing us an extra fan at 10pm. The swimming pools and grounds were beautiful, with great views of the ocean. It was a quiet and peaceful place, with the sound of the waves in the distance.

This place is so perfect, it’s hard to describe in words. Not only does it look like something out of a design magazine, but it also makes you feel deeply connected to the surrounding nature—nature that is fully respected and remains the true protagonist of the stay. Despite being “lost in the forest,” it offers an incredible number of facilities, making it comfortable even for those who may not be used to being so close to nature. My favorite part was the sound of the ocean throughout the day and night. The restaurant is excellent and reasonably priced. The hosts are super nice and welcoming—Abi, in particular, really made us feel taken care of. I honestly can’t think of a single thing that could be improved. Can’t recommend it enough!

Highly recommend a 4x4 to get up the hill. We don’t mind taking a risk but it was very uncomfortable to get up the hill in a normal car. Everything about the hotel was perfect though

The hotel itself is beautiful, remote and tucked away. It felt like an amazing escape into nature. We were unfortunately there when a hurricane arrived and had to cut our stay short but Isidro was so helpful, he was always communicating with us and provided the best service. I will always have the fondest memories of Cocolia and only wish we could have been there longer

Great relaxing vacation, barely left the hotel, highly recommend. The room and hotel grounds were beautiful and comfy, in touch with nature, but the best part was 10/10 service! The manager Isidro and all the staff really made sure we enjoyed our stay, they were more than accommodating, felt like a customized experience. Food also good, pool areas relaxing

We had a visitor one evening (scorpion in the bathroom). This was expertly handled by Jahir so no issues and a bit of wildlife was to be expected.

Incredible welcome from the manager, Every member of staff was amazing, in particular Jahir and Isidro! The food was out of this world, try the crispy tacos! Incredible views! We intended to stay 1 night and within the first hour extended our stay. 1000% recommend, this place is heads and shoulders above the competition!

I can honestly say that this was one of the best hotel experiences I’ve ever had. Everything about this place is so thoughtfully designed and truly unique. The entire property is absolutely stunning — even more breathtaking than in the pictures. We stayed in a beautiful and private bungalow with the most incredible sea view. From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcome. The entire staff was incredibly attentive and offered exceptional service throughout our stay. The chef is outstanding, creating amazing dishes with real skill. One day, after a fishing trip where we caught a tuna, he prepared a special three-course tuna dinner for us — the best tuna dishes I’ve ever had, and I’ve had many! The hotel manager is wonderful — incredibly friendly, always helpful, and arranging everything effortlessly. All in all, a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

Magical stay in the hillside above Mazunte, gorgeous views over the beach and sea. It was really private with individual bungalows, each with a lovely balcony and a shower with a great view. You could star-gaze from bed, and I really loved the decor. The restaurants were amazing, I particularly loved the Mezcaleria for sunset cocktails. We did morning yoga in the Shala and loved the seawater pools. A lovely relaxing venue, for a chill moment. The staff were so attentive and easy to use WhatsApp to pre book taxis and order the coffee ritual (highly recommend) to our room in the morning. Thank you so much to Isidro and team for a wonderful stay.

Just be aware that you are really in the nature - if you are sound sensitive, the sound of the crickets at night can be quite loud. My partner needed earplugs to sleep comfortably. Also not really a negative, but just to be aware the road leading to the property is quite rugged, so you will probably not want to go back and forth very often if you are staying here.

The property does really deliver on the promise of being immersed in the nature of the Oaxaca coast. We woke up every morning to the sound of the waves crashing on the beaches below, and every day we saw pods of dolphins in the sea in front of us. The staff were accommodating and friendly, and took care of our every need. Food and drink prices a bit higher than what you would pay in town but still reasonable. The pool is also great - it's long enough that if you do sport swimming you can get some proper laps in.

There was absolutely nothing to dislike, we had an incredible experience.

Where do I start? This is by far one of those very few special places that you never want to leave. Every single detail felt unique, from the warm welcome to the many common areas, so nicely decorated in authentic Oaxacan style. The views are just breathtaking, you are surrounded by nature, yet the ocean is always there as your compass. The bungalow felt so private and cozy, well thought through and beautifully designed, not to mention that amazing outdoor shower! Going to sleep and waking up to the sound of the crashing waves was truly special. On our last morning, we even spotted a whale from our terrace. If you are looking for a grounding experience, this is definitely the place to unwind and slow down. All the staff is amazing, you can feel the passion they have for the place and soul they put into their work, something we have rarely seen before. The General Manager was so kind and regularly checked in on us, plus he helped us with great recommendations and tour arrangements. We equally loved the food, the chef definitely knows what he is doing. Everything was super tasty, from the pizza (the best we´ve had in Mexico and we live here) and traditional tlayuda to the fish and seafood, and the prices of both food and drinks more than decent. Not last, Mermejita beach is at a 10-minute walk and is one of the wildest and most stunning beaches we´ve ever seen. We cannot wait to return, thank you so much for the warm welcome and hospitality.

We loved the place and the concept so much that we extended our stay here. Cocolia is a magical boutique hotel with bungalows in the jungle. It’s very private nature oasis, a great getaway from Mazunte town. The terrain is very well maintained, clean, but at the same time there is much respect for the nature. We got the room no 10 (ocean delux room) and the view, as well as the sound of the ocean, was unbelievable. The room is specious and has beautiful design. Taking shower with the view of the Marmejita beach was unreal. There is a pool to relax and the town is 25 min up and down walk, but is was fine for us get some sport after being lazy all day :) also, you can go directly to playa Marmejita (10 min walk), which is the most beautiful pristine beach in the area in our opinion. The restaurant is serving tasty food and all the staff are very hardworking and attentive, big bravo to Isidro, the manager, who is amazing host. A highlight of our trip! Thank you Cocolia family.

My mistake was to not fully read the negative reviews. Please, read other testimonials before booking. The first comments on Booking were that the place is amazing, but far from reality, those reviews don't cover the whole experience. The road to arrive to the place is uphill and hard rough, not good for sedan cars. I missed to read that the place doesn't have A/C to have a fresh room, so I was mostly sweating all the time inside the room. The ceiling fan made too much noise and it certainly did not help to improve the temperature. I had to put a fan inside the bed to refresh, otherwise the mosquito net impedes the air coming through if the fan is outside. The mosquito net does help to reduce bugs coming in, but it was complicated to keep it closed, it needs some Velcro. Plus, if you wake up in the middle of the night to go to the toilette, it is uncomfortable to open it to go outisde. The wall next to the main door is made of bricks that has spaces open to the outside, so obviously bugs can come in from that place. I had some ants walking, and a small spider next to the hand washer. Also a cricket jumped from the main courtains. If you have light sleep, the bugs sound at night will disturb your sleep. The big pool is next to the restaurant, but personally, I won't feel comfortable swimming next to it. At the restaurant I asked for an Horchata with Cacao, that thing tasted like dirty water, the waiter just mentioned that it is a prefabricated powder and offered to change it for a chocolate which was way better. That must be removed totally. We booked for 4 nights, but decided to leave after the third night. I did not got a reimbursement of the pending night. They were "open to negotiate" to reimburse only one night of my friends' booking. I mentioned that my reservation was separate from my friends, and since I am only staying 3 nights, 3 nights is what I should be charged for.

The pictures look nice, but totally uncomfortable. The yoga place and the small pool are good.

Like and could improve are both up above.

It was beautifully appointed but too few light sockets, lights, shower should open up to the trees and a lot of trimming would help the greatest thing about the place- the views. It was o far up the hill from town unless clients are going just for romance and/or solitude. It had many cool spots for yoga, meditation and exercise and the welcome with Zapotec smile was lovely but felt a tad forced. The staff was wonderful but the clients that were there were when I was were quite cold.
