Bustling, busy city. Its much cleaner than it used to be, less pollution. Traffic is insane, but it moves. It's small enough that you can easily walk around the central area. It's surprisingly affordable, meals were about 1/2 the cost of the islands. Loads to see and do and the shopping is fantastic if you're into that. The people are gracious and friendly and kind.

Athens is the paradise of mythology and great for visiting lots of archeological sites, as history and ancient Greek arts are everywhere. Great places to shop and the food is excellent. You get around easily by foot and the subway system is reliable. But be aware of thieves in the subway, especially on the airport line 3, and more if you carry luggage inside the trains, they tried to rob us twice with the same MO as they work in teams of 3 or 4 persons. Be very careful to wallets and pockets.

Athens has a good and cheap public transport system.
Athens has a good and cheap public transport system. Single tickets were just 1,20 Euro. You can also walk easily across the city center.
We enjoyed the National Gallery and the Benaki Museum. The National Historical Museum was interesting, presenting the modern history, but beware that most of the displays are only in Greek. Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology was surprisingly interesting, showcasing fantastic inventions made in ancient times. But the museum is small so the inventions don't all get the space they deserve to have.
We went on a three hour long free walking tour with Guru walks (guide Elena). It was a good walk with loads of information.
A local restaurant we can recommend is the family-run (?) Karamanlidika which had simple, but tasty local dishes. We loved the starters "Sahanaki fried cheese with chili and the stuffed wine leaves.
On the other hand we found a hole in the wall restaurant, Avli, which always seemed to have a long queue of guests. We stood in line for 40 minutes for disappointing food and service.

Interesting places to visit - expensive though - and very, very crowded even in May.
Be very careful walking on the polished marble pavements even in the dry - they're like an ice rink.
Plenty of good eating places covering all tastes and pockets.
Lots of graffiti around.
Strong police presence around key tourist sites - but seem more of a deterrent than active.
Plenty of taxis at a reasonable cost.
Many monuments obstructed by scaffolding and cranes (difficult balance between maintenance and obstruction of the amenity).

Athens is a wonderful city.
Athens is a wonderful city. I really enjoyed the balance of history and culture along with modern amenities and cultural experiences. If you're heading to the islands, don't bother with the coastal areas. We had 2 days to explore and felt that it was plenty, but there are plenty of museums and sites that we could've explored had we stayed longer.

Beautiful historic city. Well laid out. People friendly.
Beautiful historic city. Well laid out. People friendly. Lots to see. Was a bit chilly in early May. Beach was a bit rocky and water too cold for swimming, but worth the trip for the scenery alone {hop on hop off bus takes you to a few]. There during Greek Orthodox Easter week/holiday so lines were short, and markets not overcrowded. Lots of walking so wear good shoes and go everywhere!
Was there a week - sick first day with a cold so stayed in and relaxed. Walked around different areas local to where I stayed, Took 2 day Hop on-Hop off bus [all 3 lines] and saw most of athens in a loop, then returned to see the sights that interested me.
Make sure you buy tickets for the Acropolis in advance!! and get there on time. Early morning and late afternoon best times - not too hot and overcrowded.
Just go! Enjoy a historical city full of culture and history!
Still Athens was a fabulous little hotel with an excellent, central location and friendly staff. We were walking distance to all major sights of Athens and our host Alex gave great recommendations for food, drink and activities. Alex also made sure that we were comfortable, well taken care of and always welcomed us with a warm smile. He really made Greece feel close to home. On top of that, the beds were super comfy and the breakfast was filling and good! Would highly recommend this hotel if you are ever in Athens!
Our last hotel on our two week trip to mainland Greece. I was pleasantly surprised with this hotel. Location to Acropolis cannot be beat, friendly staff who provided us with lunch and dinner options. The rooms were small which can be expected for any hotel in a big city but to our surprise both the beds and pillows were super comfortable. Breakfast on the rooftop terrace with a view of the acropolis was a great way to end our trip. Both the sunsets and sunrises watched from the rooftop were spectacular.
Staff was very nice, i asked for early check in in advance and they cleaned the room earlier so we could get in. Very center location, restaurant and supermarket nearby. Rooftop with Acropolis view is real bonus. It's not a brand new hotel but its clean and comfortable. Breakfast was standard with egg ham cheese and several greece pastry. But no complain with the price and location its worth the money. We rent family room and turned out its 2 rooms with connecting door and 2 bathroom! Great one !
the host Dimitri was a very friendly and polite person. he showed us around the rooms and explained everything also gave information on how to get around for different things. Overall my wife, kid and I enjoyed the stay and we would recommend it to other families looking to stay in greece. Very well located, there is a parking garage, supermarket in 350mts and metro station in 550mts. the best place to live in athens, not exactly in the centre yet you feel you have everything around.
Staying here was one of our favorite locations on our trip around Greece. The host welcomed us as we arrived to check us in, show us the room and amenities, and provide excellent recommendations around town. At this location, you are walking distance from the entrance to the Acropolis and to the streets of Plaka but the street was still quiet through the day and night. Splurge (a little) for the room with a balcony and view, you won't regret the sunset and sunrise views over Athens!
The location was wonderful. Close enough to the main squares and attractions of Athens yet far enough to be removed the rush of the tourists. Picturesque streets, with many restaurant and bar choices nearby.
Property felt safe, clean, and had charm.
Dimitris was a wonderful host and made our first stop in Greece well worth it. He was respectful, provided great recommendations for food and must sees as well as organized travel for us from the airport.
We just arrived from an early flight in Athens and wanted some rest before we started our travels in Greece, we therefore weren’t looking for a 4 star hotel but just a place to sleep and rest. This was perfect, great value for money.
- room was spacious, clean and tidy
- shared bathroom was spacious, clean and tidy
- good parking in the street
- place has some cafes right next to it
- good air conditioning in the room
- there is an iron board
A comfortable, modern, stylish and functional private upper-floor balcony property that is superbly located In Kolonaki towards the foot of Lycabettus and right amongst the many shops and restaurants in one of Athens' best areas and a short walk from the X95 bus route from the airport and the Athens Metro at Syntagma Square.
Ideal for singles and couples who don't fancy a hotel, this is basically a real find at a reasonable price.
The apartment is very close to the metro, so this is the best way to explore Athens. You can reach the city centre in ten minutes. The airport is cca 1 hour from here. It is on a relatively quiet street, on the first floor. Well equipped, the kitchen has everything you need. AC, smart TV in every room, strong wifi. I travel to Greece several times a year, but this is one of the best places I've lived. Highly recommended.
Excellent location and very helpful host
Apartment was a significant size and decorated with great taste
When we come back to Greece and Athens we would definitely book this as our first choice it was way better than a 5 star hotel we stayed at in Athens when we first arrived.
The location also perfect right in the middle of the trendy areas in Athens, the only dissapointment was we couldn't stay longer
Very good location and facilities but we loved the most was the excellent staff starting from George at the front desk when we checked in. We had requested an early checking because we reached the hotel by 11am. We got the room by 12. George even offered us a complimentary breakfast while we waited which was much needed after our long flight to Greece . Will definitely stay here again when we come back .
Clean and comfortable hotel just a quick walk from the Monastiraki Square/Train station. Dimitrios from staffing contacted us quickly to make finding/checking in smooth. He also went above and beyond by offering us a walking tour of Athens to tell us some history of the city/Greece in general. He also helped us with recommendations for our next stops in Greece. Highly recommend! Thanks again Dimitrios!
Breakfast is fantastic! freshly pressed orange juice (rarely found even in luxury hotels), exceptionally friendly staff who go out of their way to help), unique design with lots of interesting artworks (in the rooms and hallways) to discover, unbeatable location (a bit loud but we’re in Greece after all)…
in sum, one of the best hotel experiences and highly recommended!
It is a little oasis in the middle of a busy part of Athens. Breakfast was excellent, and they even packed us a breakfast for our early flight. The room we had was awesome with a view of the Acropolis. Shower was spacious and the bed the most comfortable of our trip to Greece. They helped arrange transports for us to and from the airport as well. All great things to say!
The hotel served as my home base for my travels throughout Greece. As a result, the location was excellent for getting into Athens on the tram, connecting to the highway system for my daytrips to Evia, the Peloponnese, and to use the ferry service for a bit of island hopping. The location was close to shopping, and a wide variety of restaurants and cafes.
The hotel is new and very clean. The roof terrace was a lovely surprise. The service was excellent - by far the best during our trip to Greece. The rooms are compact but wasn’t an issue for us and the bed was very comfortable. The view from the room (505) was great! We will stay here again if we re-visit Athens
Claridge Hotel located in the heart of Athens - capital of Greece- is a very convenient place to stay combining near transportation of all kind (METRO, TRAINS, BUSES, TAXI) with comfort rooms in low hotel rates. Shops, restaurants and archaeological places are in a close distance as well.
Very surprised positively by this hotel. One of the best ones we stayed in while traveling in Greece. Comfortable room. Amazing breakfast with a great variety. Centre of Athens. Metro and bus stations are a 5 minute walk.
Highly recommend staying here.
Titania Hotel was perfect the location the breakfast was really delicious the staff was really friendly and easy to approach and they give you exact details 🙂 highly recommended this hotel...love to stay in Athens Greece
