Most visitors to Carcassonne come here for one thing: to see its fairytale, UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle sitting majestically on a hill east of the city.
Spectacularly lit at night, this Cité is a restored medieval fortress with 52 towers, 2 outer walls covering almost 2 miles, and a drawbridge providing access to a keep. Twice daily there are medieval jousting displays between the walls. This intriguing castle has enchanted so many that it has appeared in novels, films and even spawned a board game.
Some Carcassonne hotels, bars and restaurants can be found in the Cité but the majority are in the Ville Basse below. The stone Old Bridge, also lit at night, links it to the city centre over the Aude River.
Central Carcassonne also has its own sights including the fine art museum and the cathedral with its impressive stained-glass windows. But its best feature is the South of France way of life, with relaxed bars and pavement cafes, some serving the local speciality – cassoulet. Other slow-paced attractions include boat trips along the Canal du Midi and visiting villages like Minerve in the surrounding hills.
Served by national and low cost carriers, Carcassonne Airport is a mere 3 miles out of the city centre.

The medieval citadel is well worth a visit, and tour around the Chateau Comtal, however spolit with the array of shops selling souvenirs. We visited first May Bank Holiday week, and found many restaurants closed, and the menus limited to the same at each restaurant. The town has a square with restaurants, supermarket and cafes, again with limited menus.
Canal du Midi, towpath was over grown and a lot of homeless people sitting around drinking. The boat trips were not running at this time. The river was pretty but limited to walking along as there is no path..

Poor trip reconnaisance on my part, thinking I could navigate by car in the city center of a medieval town. Six inches of clearance on either side of our rental car as we cautiously crept down the one way streets. No parking except in an underground garage ten minutes walk away.
The castle is a twenty minute walk from city center, the last 1/4 mile uphill. Great to view the citadel walls and turrets from a distance. Inside the walls, hard to tell which cobblestones and masonry were from the middle ages, and which were 25 year old patches. Lots of ticky-tacky souvenir shops, some appealing bistros/restaurants, a fabulous 800 year old church, and lots and lots of visitors in late April. Can’t imagine what it will be like this summer.

Carcassonne is probably done in 2 days, one for old, one for new. If you are in the old town I would definitely book a restaurant for evening meal as they were often fully booked when we asked, and this is April. Also this time of year we noticed it was very quiet in the week but everything seemed to open up on Friday for the weekend.

Carcassonne is a small walkable city with a romantic castle and a lot of history! Lots of restaurants and shops to explore. Enjoy the outdoor market on Saturday morning, between the old walled city and the "new" city. Bring good walking shoes! Friendly and helpful people even if you don't speak French.

First on the visit list is the beautiful medieval castle,...
First on the visit list is the beautiful medieval castle, listed on UNESCO World Heritage registry, Its history is well documented and presented, the staff at the castle are all so friendly and kind, they tried to give me very personal time during the visit even though my exit after the closing hour was a bit protracted because I had taken a wrong "route" - wandered into the last section of the visit first and did the exploration in the reverse order! The town itself was bucolic and relaxed, clean, serene, and safe. All the people I encountered (* except one lady, who probably was not from this town!) from shops to restaurants to tourist office to streets were very pleasant and honest (when I innocently picked up oranges to buy in a basket, for example, the fruit shop lady spontaneously inspected each pieces carefully and pointed out one of them was slightly damaged, and went to pick up a better replacement for me, which she didn't have to do!) There were a lots of region specific products, as well as international products (such as Italian Truffles, Italian fur products!), interesting and delicious food to eat, and the climate is generally much warmer than other parts of France. Sunny happy rational place like this, which retained "good old France" aspects restores in a visitor's heart rare hopes for humanity! It also seemed that there is a good size of international community with expats who settled down. You can experience exotic encounters here, so, I would not say this town is a closed up, hermetic, mono-cultural location, nor it is xenophobic.
Great location right beside Carcassonne old town only a short stroll up the street.
Not many hotels have large family rooms - the Aragon family room takes 5 which suited us perfectly with 3 kids.
Good value given we only had to book 1 room for our family.
Pool is a nice bonus to cool off after wandering around the crowded old town.
Nice view of the old town from our room.
Parking included.
Everything clean and kept well.
I cannot more highly recommend this little hotel. The location is a stones throw from the castle and the old city. The host was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, he mapped out great restaurants, and the best routes to walk the city. Breakfast was ample and filling. The room was very clean and the perfect size for us. I will definitely stay here again, and recommend to my friends and family.
Thanks Rachel for her hospitality and Kindness and her recommendations
Fantastic location close to Medieval City, nevertheless very calm.
Spacious Room and Bath with very good comfort
Free Parking close by or at guarded Parkgarage only 200 m away at 7 € per 24 h
We arrived late, but receipt of key and informations were perfectly organized.
Would have liked to stay longer.
The location of this hotel and the view is outstanding, probably one of the best, if not the best, view you can get of the medieval city. Parking is paid for but close by and not that expensive which is good. Breakfast was tasty and a reasonable selection but as others have said there just wasn't enough of it, seems they aren't prepared for the number of guests.
Lovely spacious home with grand shared spaces like the salon and outdoor patio. Modernized for comfort while maintaining its old-world charm. Awesome shower, comfortable king-sized bed, luxury quality sheets and towels and the best breakfast in France. Hosts very helpful and a huge parking lot directly in front of the property made getting in and out practical.
Huge room and the hotel welcomed us to keep our touring bicycles inside the room while we stayed. Thank you. Reception staff were friendly and helpful. Nice outdoor area to sit and have a drink or snack.
Not too far to walk up to the castle/old town area. The newer part of town is also cool, over the bridge, and has an expansive farmers' market too.
Our host was very welcoming and worked hard with our poor grasp of French. The hotel was in a quiet area but in easy walking distance of the old City. We had a comfortable room overlooking the pool and to the hills beyond. There was plenty of choice at the continental breakfast and self service drinks available at all times.
Great location, rooftop bar and 4th floor restaurant have a wonderful views of the old city. Its at the foot of the old bridge and a ten minute walk up to the old city with lovely views. Very central location to Carcasonne town, the airport shuttle can leave you at a stop five mins walk from hotel.
Our third trip to Carcassonne and the best stay ever. Wonderful historical property with modern convenience. Excellent host and located in the medieval city near dining and shopping. We will stay here again. Located right next to the Chateau (castle) within the medieval city. The best!
An old-fashioned hotel, not that smart, but charming. I had a lovely big room. Very quiet street, near the train station and in the newer part of town, with good restaurants nearby. The old town is about a 30 minute walk, but I think the new town is probably a better area to stay in.
Good room in great location. The hotel is just outside the walls of the old town and has a great view from the roof top balcony. The hotel is located very close to restaurants and other services. The staff were helpful and had great recommendations for dining options.
Walking distance to the medieval city and old town. The room was big, comfortable and the children loved the bunkbeds. The hotel decor is fun, with lots of references to knights and Cavaliers. Parking is free of charge. The breakfast was good.
Fantastic location, a very short walking distance to the Medieval City. Amazing views. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was lovely with a great bathroom. Cocktails and champagne were great. Love the chilled out music at this hotel.
wonderful location. Morning walk through the medieval city and into the castle was amazing without car, traffic, and herds of tourists. the hotel is fine and worth it. dinner at the hotel was extraordinary delicious.
