United StatesHonestly, this was probably the best value hotel we have stayed at in Mexico. The rooms are very spacious and well decorated. The lobby is beautiful. Obviously, the location is great to see Calakmul. We also really enjoyed the pool in the evening. Complaints about the food have been exaggerated or it has greatly improved. Food is a little on the pricey side, but nothing outside the norm of a resort hotel in Mexico + the logistics of the location. I would recommend bringing some snacks and water (for convenience) just because there is nothing else around and choices are limited.

United StatesThis hotel is nestled away up a side street about 3 blocks or so from the main highway thru. town. They do a good business, and deserve it. They are a choice for tour groups and professionals working away from home. They have off-street parking, which is motorcycle friendly which is important to some (like me). The staff is friendly and efficient. They have an on-site restaurant which serves great food and is of course very convenient. There is a convenience store just 2 blocks away that is fairly well stocked.

The Maya train is now functional.
The Maya train is now functional. Apparently most travelers go to Calakmul, the larger Maya archaological site in the area. But there are other hidden treasures! We visited Becan, Hormiguero and Xpujil archaeological sites, and we were generally the only ones there . We were a group of bird watchers, and there are fantastic birds to see going to and at each archaeological site. Our guide, when separated from the group, came face to face with a jaguar on the road. Wow! The most amazing natural attraction in the area is the bat cave that has the largest cocnentration of bats in all of the Americas-- some 3 million! You can view this phenomenon by arriving around 4:30 or 5 pm for a short guided walk to the cave opening. Xpujil has several great (and inexpensive) restaurants.

It is well placed for some fascinating archaeology.
It is well placed for some fascinating archaeology.
But you need to be up for a "half horse" town.
To get to a basic restaurant we walked through the middle of roadworks.
Most roads giving access to the hotel were closed for road works and of course there are no diversions..you just work it out!
But the archaeology is fabulous though to get to Calakmul was a 3 hour drive each way .

Beautiful site right off the road.
Beautiful site right off the road. Walk to the Mirador Maya Hotel. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and as of September, 2023, you can climb everything. There's no pyramid, but the main structure is very tall and impressive. Bring bug spray. The mosquitoes are pretty intense.

Xpujil itself is not worth visiting.
Xpujil itself is not worth visiting. It is a good town to stay if you are travelling trough the area (for example when visiting Calakmul) and need a place to sleep. There is a small supermarket and a nice pizza restaurant. Be aware that there are only two banks and their ATM's at the time of our visit both of them did not have any money in them for two days.

Xpujil is located more or less at the center of the Calakmul...
Xpujil is located more or less at the center of the Calakmul municipality (which is large). Although this little town is not particularly oriented towards tourism, it is the best location to stay connected & have all services within easy reach so you can move between main sites and attractions around the Calakmul area.
Near Xpujil you will find from four to six striking archaeological sites and all of them are worth the visit. Of course, the most impressive one is Calakmul but there is plenty to do beyond that outstanding stop. For instance, you can ask a cab to take you to "Ejido 20 de Noviembre" and visit plenty of craft workshops (wood carving, embroidery by hand and by machine among others). I really enjoyed my visit to Hilos de Vida, Amanecer de Rio Bec & Artesanos Sabios since they give you a nice explanation on their crafts and sometimes they even offer a class for you to take (they also can get you a guide if you need translation aid).
Whether you are traveling with family, couple or by yourself, I really recommend to book no less than two nights in Casa Ka'an (about 8 to 10 minutes by car near Xpujil), 'cause they have everything you expect and a little bit more in a really cute jungle lodge composed by very independent villas which happen to be surrounded by the most wonderful environment. Needless to say that a chat with the manager (Nicolás) is always enlightening so if you catch him ask for his views on the area.
Last but no least... you will boost your experience in the region if you move around in a 4WD or even better in your own bike.

Not a lot of options for housing around the Calakmul...
Not a lot of options for housing around the Calakmul Biosphere. None are really close and you need a vehicle to get to the main part of the park. Xpujil, is little neighborhood town, not too close to ruins or highway. We enjoyed walking around town and looking at birds and the old frame houses.

We'd highly recommend staying at this hotel! Very spacious room, nice shower and we got to cool off in a lovely new swimming pool. Location very convenient to visit nearby archeological sites (we went to Calakmul) and a couple of restaurants walking distance. Arturo was a fantastic host - he is really friendly and responsive, and kindly organised transfers for us from Chetumal airport to the hotel, and from the hotel to Bacalar, at very reasonable prices (he actually drove us himself on both counts - excellent driver!).

We had a brief but enjoyable stay at this lovely hotel. The room was nestled among the trees, creating a tranquil and natural atmosphere. It was very clean and comfortable, making it a great place to rest after our time in Palenque. While we didn’t have much time to explore the area, the owner’s kindness left a lasting impression. We arrived quite late, and he met us right at the entrance on the street to hand over the keys, which we really appreciated.

Convenient location in the center of Xpujil 15mins by foot from the ADO (long distance national bus service) station. Clean, comfortable hotel rooms with staff on standby at reception and a small, efficient restaurant. Hotel rooms are nicely equipped and the hotel is a perfect overnight destination on the way to the Calakmul biosphere reserve and archaeological zone
